It Started Internally
SpentAcademy was never supposed to be a product. In 2020, we were growing our team at Spent Digital Labs and needed a structured way to onboard junior developers.
We built a simple internal LMS to house training materials, track progress, and assign projects. Within three months, friends were asking to use it. By the end of 2020, we were onboarding external students.
Turning a Tool Into a Product
The transition from internal tool to public product required a complete rebuild. We had to:
- Implement proper multi-tenancy
- Build instructor dashboards
- Create a payment system for course enrollment
- Add live session support via video integration
- Build mobile-responsive video player
We did all of this in under six months.
The Curriculum
From day one, we focused on job-ready skills:
- Frontend Development — HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React
- Backend Development — Node.js, Express, MongoDB/PostgreSQL
- Mobile Development — React Native, Flutter
- UI/UX Design — Figma, design systems, user research
- Blockchain Development — Solidity, Web3.js, DeFi fundamentals
Every course was built by developers who actually ship production code. No theory-only instructors.
The FCT Incubation Centre Partnership
In 2021, Spent Academy became an official partner of the FCT Technology Incubation Centre in Karu, Abuja. This gave our students access to physical lab space, networking events, and government startup support programs.
500+ students trained. Many now work at top Nigerian tech companies. Several have founded their own startups.
What's Next
We're expanding SpentAcademy with AI-assisted learning paths, corporate training packages, and a job board that connects graduates with top employers. The mission continues.
